In 2006 the airport was renamed to “George Best Belfast City airport” in memory of the footballer. The Runway was extended in 1952 to its current 6000ft length and at the time its terminal facilities were very basic, comprising of sheds and war time Nissan huts.įrom 1983 onwards (when it became an official airport) new buildings were constructed, and in 2001 the current terminal was built. During the war years it was known as HMS Nutts Corner and RAF Belfast, and was the birth place of many Shorts aircraft including the Shorts flying boat. The airfield started life in 1938 as Belfast Harbour airport “Sydenham”. Belfast City airport is located four miles from the city centre and shares the airfield with Bombardier Aerospace.
